Dr. Doris Bersing - Speaker at Conference on Aging
The Demographic Shift: Ready or Not, Here It Comes!

Doris Bersing, Ph.D., Executive Director of Pacific Institute, as a guest speaker, spoke about positive aging.

This conference covered such topics as:
 The changing face of aging
 What is healthy aging?
 Common chronic illnesses
 Careers in aging
 Elder abuse
 Needs assessment and care planning to support independence and self-determination
 Depression, substance abuse, and suicide among older adults
This conference was open to everyone and social work students were especially encouraged to attend.

About Doris Bersing, Ph.D. Dr. Bersing received her doctorate from L'Universite de Toulouse-Mirail in France. She is a clinical psychologist who teaches and serves clients using an existential-humanistic approach. Dr. Bersing has taught and led therapeutic groups and academic circles in Europe, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and now in the United States.

She has worked as an elder advocate, women's advocate, and mental health provider for community based programs and clinics in different countries - her specialities include aging issues, gender, cross-cultural and mental health issues.

As Pacific Institute's Executive Director, she works weekly with interns - the internship program includes students enrolled in Ph.D. or Psy. D. clinical level and M.A. in counseling psychology graduate programs. She also teaches continuing education courses and is a frequent guest lecturer throughout the United States and abroad.

In addition to her work at Pacific Institute, Dr. Bersing coordinates the Marriage and Family Therapy at Saybrook Graduate School, where she also teaches courses in Clinical Psychology and Psychopathology. Additionally, she is an adjunct faculty member at various Bay Area graduate schools. She teaches on the topics of Gerontology, Feminist Psychology, Cross-cultural Psychology, Psychopathology, and Professional Ethics.

She is the author of Self-Esteem for Women: Utopia or Truth in the New Age and Living: A Fragile Equilibrium: A Theoretical Approach in Gestalt Therapy and Personalization. She is currently writing a book about women, aging, and self-esteem.

With 27 years of counseling and teaching experience, Dr. Bersing continues her work of empowering people by helping them unfold their own potential.
