The Goal of this conference is to introduce and deepen our understanding of the theory and the practice of Existential psychotherapy in the United States.
Objectives
1. To learn the basic assumptions underlying existential-humanistic (EH) psychotherapy;
2. To connect EH assumptions to therapeutic interventions shown through “live” work with cases, demonstrations, video, and the use of literature and metaphor; active
3. To learn how to effectively work in the here and now with yourself, your client, in the relation between and/or with your working environments and the world.
4. To learn the art of using the (EH) principles as the guiding focus of your way of coming into a relationship with yourself and the world in various disciplines, work, and relationships.
The topics of the conference will introduce and deepen our understanding of the theory and practice of existential psychotherapy in the United States.
The sessions are as follows:
Memories of our Mentors: Bugental, May, and Yalom.
Students of James Bugental, Rollo May, and Irvin Yalom discuss the impact of these mentors on their lives and work.
Orah Krug, Kirk Schneider, Stephen Curtin
Existential-Integrative Therapy: Latest Developments.
The originator of this approach discusses his vision of its present and future applications. "Awe," along with "Experiential Democracy" will be addressed.

Cultivating Presence: The "You", the "Me" and the "Us".
A student of Yalom and Bugental, she presents her research and efforts toward deepening presence in the client, therapist and the field we create in therapy.

East meets West: an Existential-contemplative Model of psychotherapy. A long time practitioner of meditative practices presents his therapeutic model that integrates that experience with what he has learned during his extensive collaboration with James Bugental. Ken Bradford

Drawing on their training with Irving Yalom and Jim Bugental these seasoned therapists present their work with couples. They take betrayal as an existential given in couple relationships, an experience which initiates the possibility of deeper trust, greater awareness and healing, both within the self and between partners.

The Presenters:
Nader Robert Shabahangi, Ph.D., is current President and Co-Founder of EHI and President and Founder of the Pacific Institute. A licensed psychotherapist with a Ph.D. from Stanford University, Nader is a leader, trainer, and writer on applying the Existential Humanistic approach to the treatment of elderly in the United States and Europe.
Christine Armstrong, M.F.T., is a licensed psychotherapist in private practice, specializing in individual, couple, and group psychotherapy from an Existential perspective. She co-authored with Jim Bugental in “The Psychology of Existence and Integrative, Clinical Perspective” and currently serves on the board of Mosaic Multicultural Foundation.
Ken Bradford, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist in private practice, specializing in Existential- Contemplative psychotherapy. An adjunct professor at JFK University and CIIS, Ken has been a practitioner in the Theravada and Tibetan Buddhist traditions for over 30 years, and is professionally engaged in applying meditative sensibilities to psychotherapy practice.
Ilene Serlin, Ph.D., A.D.T.R, is a licensed psychologist in private practice and a registered dance and movement therapist. A Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Ilene has studied Gestalt, Existential, and Archetypal psychology with Laura Perls and James Hillman, and has taught at Saybrook Graduate School, UCLA, the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, and Lesley University.
Louis Dangles, M.F.T., is a licensed psychotherapist in private practice, specializing in individual, couple, and group psychotherapy from an Existential perspective. Currently on the board of Mosaic Multicultural Foundation, and providing pro bono supervision for Apple Family Works in San Rafael, CA.
Stephen Curtin, Ph.D., is a Co-Founder of EHI and a licensed psychologist in private practice. A graduate of Saybrook Institute, Stephen trained with James Bugental, Ph.D. He has lectured and written on applying the Existential-Integrative model to psychotherapy with children and adolescents.
Kirk Schneider, Ph.D., is past President and co-Founder of EHI, current editor of the Journal of Humanistic Psychology and author of numerous publications that defined and elaborated on the Existential-Integrative approach to psychotherapy. His application of this approach is the subject of a recent APA video on Existential Psychotherapy. His most recent books include Rediscovery of Awe, and Existential-Integrative Psychotherapy.
Orah Krug, Ph.D., is a Co-founder of EHI and its current Training Director. Orah is a licensed psychotherapist who completed her doctoral studies at Saybrook Graduate School.
