Be anything but ordinary...
- Barbary Lane
Clinicians and Independent and assisted living care professionals need to understand how the experiences of LGBT elders aging and sometimes near end of life may differ from those of other older adults. This segment of an ongoing training will try to understand what issues are involved when caring for those LGBT elders.
Barbary Lane, a special independent living facility has invited Pacific Institute’s interns to create a therapeutic environment at their facility.
The objectives of this placement are:
- Learning the specific issues that affect the bio-psycho-social- emotional, and spiritual realms of LGBT seniors.
- Learn how to support in their different living situations the psychological and spiritual needs of the LGBT senior population.
- Understand new kinds of awareness as put forth by process-oriented and humanistic-existential psychology that can inspire attitude shifts in regards to cultural biases.
- Notice hidden dimensions in interactions with people from minorities and how race, gender, class, and culture impact our level of relationships and eventually our level of care.
- Learn effective ways to SEE people who are &ldqup;different” from us -including LGBT people, if so.
- Identify our cultural blinders and commit to the removal of them for the greatest good involved with our mission of caring for the elderly.
