91.7 KALW Radio - Doris Bersing, Ph.D.
Monday, May 5th - 8 - 9 p.m.
Institute on Aging and On Lok are creating a radio show called Aging Your Way to air on 91.7 KALW, beginning in April. One of the program's topics is "Sex Over 60" - focusing on the physiological angle on 4/28, and on the psychological/spiritual angle of intimacy on 5/5.
Dr. Doris Bersing of Pacific Institute will take the psychological/spiritual angle. She would discuss some of the findings of researchers like Drs. Margaret Nusbaum and Richard Sadovsky - researchers in the field of human sexuality and family medicine- who confirm that the majority of studies on sex and aging show that most individuals in later life retain sexual interest and ability. Results of earlier studies indicate that many men and women remain sexually active well into their 70s and find a pleasurable reward in staying that way. Recent surveys by AARP-- American Association of Retired Persons- in 2005, and many clinical cases confirm these earlier findings.
Although sexual activity is potentially life-long, they say, often medications, illnesses, partner availability, and relationship problems, more than age-related changes in sexual responsiveness can be responsible for discontinuation of sexual activity. Clinicians can help older patients adapt to these changes and maintain maximal sexual health. With intact health, and an open attitude towards sex in adult life, aging patients' sexual functioning can be preserved until the end of life. There is still lust into old age!
